Gorilla trekking rules and etiquette

These rules protect the gorillas, who are vulnerable to human illness, and they keep you safe. Rangers enforce them on every trek.

Before you go

  • You must be at least 15 years old.
  • Do not trek if you have a cold, flu or any contagious illness. Tell us early and we advise on your options.
  • Carry a mask. Rangers may ask you to wear one near the gorillas.

With the gorillas

  • Stay several metres away. If a gorilla comes closer, stay calm and follow your guide.
  • Keep your voice low and do not point or make sudden moves.
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke near the gorillas.
  • Photograph without flash.
  • Spend no more than one hour with the family.

If a gorilla charges

Crouch low, look away and wait for your guide. Never run. Rangers are trained for this and incidents are rare.

Leave no trace

Carry out your rubbish. If you need the toilet in the forest, tell your guide, who will show you how to bury waste.
