Bwindi and Mgahinga

Uganda gorilla trekking

Uganda is home to roughly half of the world's mountain gorillas. You can trek in two parks, combine the trek with chimpanzees and game drives, and choose from the widest range of gorilla families anywhere.

Why trek gorillas in Uganda

  • The most families to choose from. Bwindi has several sectors, each with its own habituated groups.
  • Easy to add other wildlife. Chimpanzees at Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park and boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel fit around a trek.
  • A habituation option. In the Rushaga sector, small groups can spend up to four hours with a family that is still being habituated. See habituation or standard trek.

Getting to the gorillas

Bwindi and Mgahinga lie in the far south-west of Uganda. Most travellers either drive a full day from Kampala or Entebbe, or take a short domestic flight to a nearby airstrip and drive the final stretch. We recommend the option that matches your time and comfort, and we arrange the vehicle and driver-guide either way.

Frequently asked questions

Which Uganda park is best for gorillas?

Bwindi offers the most choice and the most lodges. Mgahinga is smaller and quieter, and suits travellers who also want golden monkeys. Our guides to Bwindi and Mgahinga compare them.

How many days do I need for a gorilla trek in Uganda?

Three days is the practical minimum when you fly in from Entebbe. A fourth day adds rest time, and five or more days lets you combine gorillas with other wildlife.
