Guide
Uganda gorilla trekking: the complete guide
Everything you need to plan a gorilla trek in Uganda, from choosing a park to knowing what the day feels like.
Choose your park
Uganda has two gorilla parks. Bwindi has the most gorilla families and lodges. Mgahinga is smaller and quieter, with golden monkeys nearby.
The trek day, step by step
- Briefing. Rangers explain the rules and assign your group.
- The walk. Trackers lead you to the family, sometimes in an hour and sometimes after most of a day.
- The hour. You stay with the gorillas for one hour, at a respectful distance.
- The return. You walk back, usually to a certificate and a late lunch.
Seasons and fitness
Drier months are June to September and December to February. Read the best time to go and how difficult it is.
Permits and planning
Permits are limited and issued only to licensed operators, so send us your dates and we handle the rest.
Respect for the gorillas
- Keep several metres away, and let the gorillas approach you.
- Stay home if you are ill, because gorillas catch human diseases.
- No flash photography, no food and no loud voices.
